KCCA FC, Azam play for a one all stalement

Midfielder Lawrence Bukenya is lifted by his teammates after his strike against Azam on Thursday

Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) and Azam played to a one all draw at the StarTimes Stadium Lugogo on Thursday in a preseason club friendly.

The match was the first high profile friendly for the reigning league champions and Uganda Cup holders as they intensified preparations for the 2017/2018 season.

KCCA FC was missing Benjamin Ochan, Paul Musamali, Isaac Muleme, Muzamir Mutyaba, Paul Mucureezi and Derrick Nsibambi all on national duty.

Together with Denis Okot who is just recovering from injury and Timothy Awany who is away on trials in South Africa.

That prompted the manager Mike Mutebi to give chances to new recruits and those players who had limited playing time from last season.

The manager deployed a back three of skipper Habib Kavuma, Filbert Obenchan and Peter Magambo, which played in front of Charles Lukwago in goal.

The six man midfield of Tonny Mawejje, Abdallah Mohammed, Saddam Juma, Junius Poloto, Ronald Kikonyogo and Mustafa Kizza played behind a lone striker in Tito Okello.

It was an end to end passing game with few chances created for Okello, but also the defense kept the required discipline, keeping the Azam back line at bay.

Lukwago in goal also put up a man of the match performance, pulling off reflex saves to keep KCCA FC in the game most of the time.

Changes were made in the second half with Faisal Kiberu coming on for for injured Obenchan, Saddam Juma was also replaced by Lawrence Bukenya.

And it was Bukenya who gave KCCA FC the lead in the 74th minute with a thunderous shot outside the box off a Julius Poloto solo run.

The goal forced the fans to ask for more and the team pushed for a second until the 92nd meet when Azam won a free kick at the edge of the KCCA FC penalty area.

The set piece by Masoud Abdallah hit the woodwork before finding the back of the net to level matters and it wasn’t long before the referee blew the final whistle.
