It was team effort – Ochan

Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) entered history books as the first Ugandan club to reach the group stages of the Total CAF Confederations Cup since the new format came into place.

KCCA attained the feat after eliminating Egyptian side Al Masry 4-3 on penalties on Saturday night.

Normal time had ended 1-0 in Al Masry’s favour, thanks to Ahmed Gomma’s first half goal that made it 1-1 on aggregate.

Goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan was the hero of the day, saving two penalties before stepping up to take the decisive spot kick as KCCA progressed to the group stage.

The talented shot-stopper believes the victory came down to team effort with every department working to their best ability.

First of all I will say glory to God. We are finally there. We have made history

Ochan told before downplaying the idea of being him who guided KCCA FC to the promised lad.

I wouldn’t want to be singled out but I believe it was a team effort from the players, the technical team and the supporters back home

Ochan also revealed there was a last minute change in the order of taking penalties with striker Geoffrey Serunkuuma telling him to take the final kick.

I was supposed to take the 4th penalty and Majwega to go for the last one but Geoffrey (Serunkuuma) signaled to me to wait maybe because he saw my confidence had grown and I would have the guts to take the final penalty

The soft-spoken goalie also believes the achievement attained will be a turning point to Ugandan football.

It is a big step for the club but also for the country at large. We shall get more exposure and more experience as a team because we shall rub shoulders with the best on the continent.

Ochan saved Said Elsaid and Ahmed Monsour’s efforts and went ahead to convert the decisive penalty as the team progressed to the group stages of the competition.
