KCCA FC beat old rivals SC Villa 2-1 to secure its first victory of the season in a pulsating Kampala derby at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

A stunning late goal from substitute Umar Lutalo proved the decisive moment after a contest filled with spectacular goals.

The match began with the expected intensity of the Kampala derby, quickly plunging into a physical battle. SC Villa’s Diego Semugera was the first player cautioned in the 30th minute for a foul on Saidi Mayanja as the midfield battle escalated.

Just one minute later, KCCA broke the deadlock. Forward Ivan Ahimbisibwe received the ball from the midfield, and finished sweetly, leaving the Villa goalkeeper for dead to give the Cityzens a 1-0 lead.

SC Villa’s frustration led to another booking, with Geofrey Lubangakene receiving a yellow card in the 40th minute for a foul on Sammy Ssebaduka.

The visitors best chance of the half came moments later when Hassan Mubiru broke through, but KCCA defender Enock Walusimbi came to the rescue with a timely and crucial clearance, ensuring the Cityzens held a narrow 1-0 lead going into the break.

After recess, Villa had a bright start pressing aggressively for an equalizer. Their efforts paid off on the hour mark when KCCA defender Enock Walusimbi conceded a penalty by committing a foul in the box. Yiga Najib stepped up and converted the spot-kick, levelling the tie at 1-1.

The pace remained frantic, resulting in further cautions just four minutes later: Obenchan Filbert (KCCA) and Kato Ssemayange (SC Villa) both went into the referee’s book in the 64th minute.

KCCA made two tactical substitutions in the 68th minute, hoping to regain control, Sharifu Ssengendo replaced Enock Walusimbi, and Yiga Alex came on for Ashraf Mugume.

With time winding down and the score still tied, KCCA made a double change aimed squarely at looking for a winning goal, Emmanuel Anyama and Umar Lutalo were introduced in the 84th minute, replacing Ivan Ahimbisibwe and Shafik Kwikiriza, respectively.

The tactical move paid off immediately. Just five minutes after coming on, Umar Lutalo slotted home the crucial goal in the 89th minute, with a fine free kick, to secure a 2-1 victory.

Peter Magambo replaced Saidi Mayanja late on, as KCCA’s Herbert Achai and Villa’s custodian David Lukwago were cautioned in added time.

The win marks KCCA FC’s first league victory of the season.

With an international break coming up. The Cityzens will return to league action at home on Thursday, October 16th, when they face Lugazi FC at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
