KCCA FC announces the re-signing of former captain and celebrated goalkeeper, Charles Lukwago, on a two year contract following his spell at South African side Venda FC.

Lukwago’s initial five year stint at the club was nothing short of legendary. From 2016, he quickly established himself as a dominant force between the posts under the guidance of coach Mike Mutebi.

Lukwago was a key member of the squad that secured Uganda Premier League titles in 2017 and 2019, adding to the club’s trophy cabinet with Uganda Cup victories in 2017 and 2018.

Charles was also a key player in KCCA FC’s memorable runs to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages in 2017 and the CAF Champions League group stages in 2018.

Lukwago’s leadership and belief in the club’s philosophy were most poignantly displayed in 2019 when, as skipper and first choice goalkeeper, he led the team to its second ever CECAFA Kagame Clubs Cup success after a 41-year wait. This was a victory that cemented his place in KCCA FC’s history books.

Lukwago left KCCA FC in 2021 for a professional stint in Ethiopia, where he featured for Saint George FC and Hawassa City FC. He later joined Venda FC in South Africa in 2024

As he returns to Lugogo, Lukwago brings with him experience and a deep understanding of what it means to wear the KCCA FC jersey.

Charles Lukwago spoke to this website upon putting pen to paper and said,

KCCA is a club that holds a special place in my heart, and I am ready to give my all to help the team achieve its objectives. I return with more experience and a better understanding of the game. We have a mix of youth and experience in the group, and hopefully we can use that well to achieve the main team objectives.

Coach Brian Ssenyondo had this to say upon Lukwago’s return.

Charles is a leader and a proven winner. His return brings experience and a level of quality to the team. His presence will strengthen our goalkeeping department and lift the entire squad, both on and off the field.

Lukwago is expected to compete with goalkeepers Mutwalibi Mugolofa, Anthony Emojong, and Humphrey Oyirwoth.

Lukwago becomes the club’s seventh major signing in the current transfer window after Ivan Ahimbisibwe, Herbert Achayi, Lazaro Muhindo, Enock Walusimbi, and Rogers Mugisha, and Ssali Alpha Thierry.
